They now have the chance to play more competitive tournaments playing against the best in the country.

When it comes to basketball, Sun Conference players do not get left behind. They also have players that have the potential to make it to the NBA and make their mark. The players that excel when it comes to basketball include: Nate Marshall, Jonathan Dunn, David Butler and Blake Touchard. With their performance, they can attract and impress scouts from the NBA so that they get the chance to make it big.

The Sun Conference is also known as an American based athletic confrence. It is actually affiliated with the NAIA. They also compete in the NAIA division II. They do this competition for there basketball programs. They have institutions that are located in South Carolina, as well as Florida, and Georgia. There are 11 members in the Sun Conference as of today. Sometime in 2012, they are expected Thomas University to join The Sun Conference. The Sun Conference has been alive and going since the year of 1990. They first started out as the Florida Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The name didn’t change until 1992, which was two years later after the conference was put together. The current name that they have, wasn’t put together until the year of 2008. The name changed because they were combined with two other institutions that were outside of the state of Florida. All of the current members that make up the 11, are from Florida. They deal with basketball, cheerleading, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis, and track and field. They have been around for a while and they are continuing to grow and expand as the near future hits. They have already made a success.

The Sun Conference was founded as the Florida Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 1990. Its original name lasted only 2 years before officially adopting the name “Florida Sun Conference” in 1992, as it would continue to be called. The Florida Sun Conference grew its reputation as a Florida based conference known for spirited play, sportsmanship and competition among small independent schools within Florida. It is commonly known as an American-based athletic conference affiliated with the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics). Member institutions are located in Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. The Sun Conference has greatly proven to be one of the top leagues in the NAIA with its teams consistently being recognized in the list of nation’s best athletes in their various fields of play e.g. Baseball, Softball, Men’s Basketball, Women’s Basketball, Men’s Soccer, Men’s Tennis, Men’s Track, and Women’s Track.
The conference has constantly grown strong as it has ever been and promises a thrilling 2011 season. The teams to look out for right now are Embry-Riddle, who are on the edge of winning 30 games, not to mention having dominated the last season games. Also to look out for is Savannah College of Art and Design. Other schools to look out for are Webber International, St. Thomas, Southeastern, and Northwood.

Here are some of the teams we’d like to see go head-to-head with our men and women under the sun…
Georgia Bulldogs: The Dawgs are back in action and we’d love to see any of our southeastern teams take them on. Though there aren’t any official Sun Conference football teams we bet the conference’s hockey teams could show Georgia a thing or two…
South Carolina: The Gamecocks are the two-time undisputed champs when it comes to baseball and everyone knows that Baseball’s our greatest strength, too. We’d match them up against the Bees and see what happens.
Florida Tech: Tech’s got the most game when it comes to pigskin but we hear their field hockey team is quite good as well. We’re not too bad, either, so a matchup would surely be a lot of fun to watch.
Get out there and support your Sun Conference teams!

With a month to go in the regular season, the teams that can win the 10-team Sun Conference stands at a select few. The leading contenders right now are Embry-Riddle, who are on the verge of winning 30 games, and have dominated the conference all season, losing just two league games. The main competition of Embry-Riddle for the conference title is the Savannah College of Art and Design. SCAD has held their own this season, and while they have struggled outside the conference, they sit at second in the league standings and are still within striking distance of Embry-Riddle, with plenty of time left in the season. Outside of the top two teams in the Sun Conference, there is a group of mediocre teams that could still catch fire late in the season and make a run at the conference title. Those schools are Webber International, St. Thomas, Southeastern, and Northwood. Of those teams, the one with the best chance to threaten Embry-Riddle and SCAD is Southeastern. Southeastern has the second best overall record of all the teams in the Sun Conference, and they have won 10 of their last 11 games. SCAD and Southeastern are very much in the race for The Sun Conference title, but it won’t be easy taking it away from Embry-Riddle.

The 2010-2011 Men’s Basketball season looks to be another competitive race in Sun Conference competition. As you might remember last year’s title came down just two points as the Embry-Riddle Eagles narrowly soared past runner-up Northwood Seahawks by a final score of 55 to 53, as both breeds of bird flew high above the rim. The new year features many familiar faces in what should once again be a hotly contested stretch of games leading up to the tournament in late February. As the regular season is already underway, giving us at least a preview from baseline to baseline conference-wide, based on what we’ve seen so far here’s how we expect the top seeds to stack up come tourney time. 1.Embry-Riddle Last year’s defending champions look to once again walk away with the Sun Conference crown. Despite an early season loss to Georgetown (yes, that Georgetown, the top 10 NCAA squad), the future looks bright for this bunch, unparalleled in terms of talent at least at the conference level. 2.Northwood Though the Eagles may be the better team from top to bottom, the Seahawks look to at least make it interesting for another go round. Led by sophomore Patrick Horstmann and Owens Community College transfer Jonathan Dunn, Northwood hopes another year of maturation and an infusion of talent is enough to take over the number 1 spot.3.Florida Memorial Junior Guard George Gray has been playing like a man possessed in early season conference play as he hopes to prolong the Lions way well into the New Year. Not thought of as a true contender for the conference title heading into the season, Gray and the Lions have been turning heads at times this season, as dangerous a team as there is in the field, only needing a little more consistency on a nightly basis to be considered a viable threat.
